What is the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an internationally recognized tool that assesses and describes the language proficiency of foreign language learners. Created by the Council of Europe, it establishes a scale of six proficiency levels, ranging from elementary (A1) to expert (C2).

CEFR Levels:

  • A1 – Beginner or Breakthrough Level: You start to understand and use familiar expressions.

  • A2 – Elementary or Survival Level: You can communicate in simple ways in everyday situations.

  • B1 – Intermediate or Threshold Level: You understand the main points on familiar topics and can travel with confidence.

  • B2 – Upper Intermediate or Independent Level: You feel comfortable interacting with native speakers.

  • C1 – Advanced or Proficient Level: You express yourself fluently and in detail on a wide range of complex topics.

  • C2 – Mastery Level: You understand everything you read or hear and can express yourself spontaneously with precision.

The CEFR is used in many countries as a foundation for designing language learning programs and certifying language skills. At IESIG-FLE, we use this framework to guide you in your language learning journey and to help you validate your language proficiency.
